Another noteworthy facility to work and play at is Mission Bay Park. At 4,235 acres it is the largest man mad aquatic center in our United States. Almost half land and half water there are sailing, skiing, fishing, swimming and many more outdoor activities set in this family atmosphere.

The brilliant minds of the 1940´s Chamber of Commerce were seeking ways to build San Diego. They wanted Mission Beach to be more of a tourist and resort town, rather then just a military community. The Chamber dredged and filled the marsh and turned it into an almost entirely man made town with both people and wildlife attractions
.
Located just off of Mission Bay Drive on Quivira Road is home to Seaforth Sportfishing. They are currently revamping the building and are open for your next fishing trip expedition. The Mission Bay Golf Course is an 18 whole executive course, fairly inexpensive and beautifully designed with the only night lighting gold course in San Diego.

History of Mission Beach
San Diego in general is here today as a result of the Trans Continental Rail Road making San Diego it´s last stop in 1919. Broad minded and entrepreneurial people of that era had been watching both Pacific Beach and Coronado overflow with success.

Since Mr. John Spreckels had already spent much of his time planning and developing Coronado he wanted to start his own resort without taking away from his other success. Alas Mr. Spreckels passed away before his dream was realized. Mr. George Barney was on hand to see to it that the plan would be completed and drawings were created and put in place much like what it is today.

Mr. Walt Disney was not the only dreamer to come to California and see something that was so elaborate one had to think way outside the box! Interest in the area spread and custom homes were built sparing no expense. The entire community plan won admiration from the Second Annual Exhibition of Landscape Architects in Lost Angeles California in 1925. Known today as the Father of Mission Beach, Mr. JM Asher brought the street car to Mission Beach which had huge affects on residents being able to travel to other towns and also live close to the shore.

As with most new towns along the coast of California, Mission Beach and San Diego itself had its ups and downs with real estate sales. However, today there is much pride and excitement in the small beach community. The roller coaster and fresh water pool have both been entered into the books as San Diego Historic Sites saving their fate.

Although Ocean Beach already had an amusement park, it was difficult to get to and made its last cotton candy in 1916. I´m sure that was on Spreckels mind as he saw a successful resort in his mind´s eye. Tourism is a major factor in Mission Beach´s history and future. As some of the older homes along the bay are being torn down and either re-done or turned into luxury condominiums.
