History of Del Mar starts in the late 1800´s, Mr. Theodore Loop, working for the railroad spotted the beautiful coastline and deemed it "the most attractive place on the entire coast!" He and a Mr. Taylor saw early on that the gorgeous beaches and great land had potential to be a hot spot for vacationers and weekend getaways. Mr. Loop and his wife built a little tent city and called the area Del Mar after a poem she had read.
Both Mr. Loop and Mr. Taylor, with a great deal of planning, built a fine hotel, 40 small homes, a Victorian style school House and an observation tower, a general store and the community of Del Mar was born. in 1886 Mr. Taylor also opened the Casa Del Mar one of the first resort style hotels on the coast. Sadly in 1889 Mr. Taylor's dream resort burnt to the ground and although he vowed he would rebuild, they say he was so distraught he moved to Texas and never returned. The city was incorporated in 1958 and has a population today of a little over 4,500.
