History of Encinitas - In the year 1669, Gaspar De Portola was the governor of Baja California and led a vast expedition throughout what is known today as San Diego and Orange County. Upon arriving on the small beach area De Portola noticed the stunning oak trees surrounding the hills and named the region Encina Canada which is "Hills of Live Oaks" in Spanish. Once the land had transferred to the United States, a fellow named Jabez Pitcher filed a claim for 160 acres near the railroad tracks and help developed the area into the beautiful west coast small town it is today. |
