History of Ocean Beach - David Collier is noted as the marketing guru promoting Ocean Beach in the 1890´s. He brought the electric street car and paved roads to the town and also an amusement park. It was a resort town for those that could get away from the hustle and bustle of San Diego. Unfortunately the amusement park was built a little to close to the ocean and washed away within a few years. But it was happily replaced on Newport Avenue with a merry-go-round, a dance hall and skating rink. The residents had opened a school in 1910 and a library was soon to follow. During the Great Depression the homeowners were blessed with a few local merchants who offered credit and the survival of the sleepy seashore town was kept intact. Once the Interstate 5 was constructed in the 1950´s the town was literally cut off from many tourists and enjoyed a peaceful "locals only" atmosphere. The hills were soon cut into to make way for housing and Mission Bay was dredged and became its own noteworthy city. The early 1980´s brought a new camaraderie the town had been lacking during the 60´s and 70´s. With holiday celebrations and an award winning Farmer's Market on Newport Avenue the town is still an abundantly natural and close knit community.
