La Jolla is only 15 minutes from downtown San Diego with its sandy beaches and outdoor activities, fine restaurants and shops. Known to be one of the most affluent communities in the United States it truly has a down to earth feel to it. Living in La Jolla California has much to offer for every member of your family. The average single family home sold in September, 2006 was a little over $2,000,000. However the market is experiencing a slow down and prices seem to be leveling out. There are many picturesque homes with tree lined streets and quiet neighborhoods. La Jolla was established by two brothers from Mexico looking for the perfect clay for their pottery business.They found it here in beautiful La Jolla Canyon.The company and the area flourished as their employees built their homes in La Jolla and made the tiles for many structures including the Mission San Diego de Alcala, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church.

Today La Jolla is home to renowned institutions such as The Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Stephen Birch Aquarium and Museum. La Jolla is also well known as the home to University of California San Diego and many Bio-Tech and software companies.

The La Jolla Cove located on 1100 Coast Blvd. is a very small beach adjacent to sandstone cliffs. The cove is one of the most photographed beaches in the area.

The top employer in La Jolla must be Scripps Memorial Hospital and Scripps Research Institute. Scripps is the world´s largest not for profit biomedical research facilities with more then 2,800 faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, technical and administrative support. It is located on Torrey Pines Road.

Speaking of Torrey Pines, We would be remiss if we were not to mention the Torrey Pines Golf Course  This well established two championship 18 hole courses offers a golf school, and beautiful state of the art golf shop.

La Jolla offers San Diego School District  as their educational facilities for grades K thru 12. Serving school age children for 150 years the district has a variety of diverse backgrounds with over 15 ethnic groups and over 60 different languages.Recent bonds have passed to rebuild 161 schools to top performance levels. The district has also been awarded several grants to bring into focus their extensive reading programs and science through technology programs.

Private education is also offered in the La Jolla Real Estate area with La Jolla Country Day School.  They offer a sound liberal arts background and strong college preparation and counseling programs are hallmarks in education. They cater to grades preschool to 12 grades for an alternative to the public school system.

La Jolla Cove has many areas to explore.La Jolla YMCA  has two locations in La Jolla giving you plenty of after school and weekend activities for your children.

For college age students the University of California San Diego offers recent studies to show A Global Analysis of University Biotechnology Transfer and Commercialization attempted to identify which universities in the world performed the most efficiently and effectively during the three critical stages of biotechnology development and transfer; publications, patents and commercialization index.UC San Diego received high marks in all three. The university is also ranked among the top 10 public colleges in the U.S. for best value, according to the Sept. 2006 issue of Kiplinger Personal Finance.

San Diego State University  is the fifth largest university in California and largest in San Diego. They have been awarded a variety of rankings and distinctions from the state of California in academic programs, diversity and internationally.

La Jolla shopping  also offers unique shopping experience with their high end art galleries and original boutiques lining the streets downtown.San Diego has many diverse attractions for the entire family. La Jolla FiberArts  is located in the beautiful coastal village and is devoted entirely to the textile arts, and honors the work of fine artists who are known both locally and nationally. The annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts is held on the University of California San Diego´s campus and offers one of the top rated art shows in California.The proceeds go to over 25 organizations to help the disabled and in its twenty years has been a huge success.

As you can see, La Jolla and the San Diego area are quite diverse in cultural education.The Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography  is a popular field trip for school age children as well as family outings. Located on La Jolla Shores Drive, it is open every day accept Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. The aquarium has a wide variety of tours for the family and fascinating field study work in the world of oceanography. Not to be missed!
